A History of Lugets

The Luget Brothers, who were Huguenots escaping religious persecution in France, opened their original shop at 214 High Street in 1814. From there they supplied Devon's gentry with impeccable, hand-crafted clothing and soon acquired a reputation for work of the highest quality.

Luget's presence on the High Street was brought to a sudden and dramatic end in the spring of 1942 when the original shop was destroyed in the wartime blitz on Exeter. However they were soon back in business in new premises in Little Castle Street, near the Old Law Courts, where they stayed until the move to the present shop in Cathedral Yard in April 2000.

Over the years Luget's reputation has not been surpassed and our tailors and cutters ensure that the shop continues to provide its customers with a combination of fine craftsmanship and excellent value. Moreover, they have also introduced a range of traditional clothing from renowned companies such as Hackett, Turnbull & Asser, Magee and Bladen. More casual lines have been introduced and we became the only outlet in the South West to stock the RM Williams range of stylish outback clothing and accessories.

Luget's has been in the same family now since 1932 and is now under the leadership of Mark Simpson, who is the fourth generation Simpson to run the business, Lugets is going from strength to strength and continues to enjoy the position as the Number 1 gentlemen's tailors in the South West.
